What heating system is most efficient?

Question:

I have a Lennox Pulse, it is now about 13 years old and getting noisier. Questions: 1)At our local home show I was looking at the Carrier Infinity it seems to be a good machine but is it? 2)Another question is this,  is there others I should be looking at. My number one concern is efficiency, both in gas and electrical usage. 3)Another question would be, if one compares my high efficient Lennox pulse to the Infinity what is the efficiency savings and if little should I just get this one repaired.  I realize that Lennox has had a major problem with this unit. I thank you for any advice you may give me. Keith

Response:

What is most efficient depends on many factors.  Local energy rates, heat and cooling loads etc.  Generally the very most efficient have very long payback periods if they pay back at all.  The almost as good units generally are the best investment. — Dia ’s Muire duit Joe M

Is the current system giving you problems besides the noise?  13 years isn’t really old for a furnace, so there should be no hurry to replace it unless it’s giving you trouble.  Depending on the source of the noise there may be ways to quiet it a bit.

Response:

If you want quiet – and low operating cost – look into ground source geothermal heat pump.  The installation will set you back $$ – but the long term operating costs are dirt cheap. — Roger in Winnipeg
